These illustrated mixed media textile works are from a series which explore stories from the rich history of the linen textile industry in the artists native Northern Ireland, and her adopted home, Turkey.  The series is composed of fragmented and embroidered patchwork textiles documenting scenes from the industry in both locations.

In Northern Ireland, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, linen manufacturing was an important industry, with mills in nearly every town or village, and where, at its height, 40% of the population were involved in the production of the fabric.  Since the collapse of this industry in the early twentieth century, most of the factories have closed, and the skilled workers and machinery have disappeared.  Nonetheless, traces of this rich heritage remain.  These works draw inspiration from scenes of the past, recollecting memories of the linen industry, including the landscape, the processes of flax production, the mills, and the machinery that have disappeared, or that lie abandoned as a reminder of the past. In keeping with the theme of linen production, the artist has also investigated linen production in the Aegean region, examining the machinery used by local producers of linen and silk in ÖdemiÅŸ.

These artworks combine a variety of techniques.  Developed using a combination of freehand and digital drawing methods, the final artworks are printed on to Turkish and French linen, and a selection of reclaimed fabric swatches using screen printing.  The final works are assembled using a combination of patchwork applique, machine, and hand embroidery.
