“Out of Sight, Out of Mind” is an exhibition of fashion illustrations intended to raise the conscience of all stake holders in the current fashion system. It confronts the reality of what we are designing, manufacturing, buying and wearing. It aims to emphasise the cost of the current system on both people and planet by introducing a new atypical fashion victim. These new fashion victims encompass all manner of ethical issues related to the fashion industry. Planet earth is one such victim; environmental degradation is explored in the context of issues such as landfill, sea and air pollution, water wastage, and animal cruelty. The garment worker is another such victim; poor labour practices such as child labour, exploitation, and health and safety problems highlight concerns in the production system. The user is also identified as a further fashion victim, not for their love of fashion but for the psychological and physical illnesses which have evolved in recent years alongside the rise of fast fashion, social media and celebrity.
